Very large, small headed, round-winged, long tailed, ground dwelling bird. Unfeathered bluish head and redish throat with a dark breast, belly and upper back. Iridescent bronze and green wings. Barred primaries with a dark fan-shaped tail with brown or buff band at the tip. The male have a larger head with wattle at the throat, caruncled forehead and projection behind the bill. Also more iridescent plumage. Males gobble and strut with plumage erect, tail fanned, head ornaments swollen and wings drooped with quills rattling. Female build the nest in concealed grass or shrubs. Shallow depression lined with few dead leaves and or grass. Hen lays 10-12 eggs. Buff to white in colors and marked with dull brown. Incubation 27-28 days. Only female tends to young. Deciduous and mixed forest, open woods, savanna. Feed mostly on seeds, nuts, fruit, leaves, many plants and insects, especially grass hoppers.
