Black Bear can be found in all of Colorado. Average weight adult 200-600 pounds. Ranges in area of 500-600 square miles. 1-2 cubs born in Jan/Feb every other year. Birth weight 1/2 pound. Nocturnal and solitary and classified as a carnivore although most diet consist of vegetation, fruits, nuts and roots. Other favorite foods are fish. Typical coloration is black to cinnamon with white blaze on the chest. The snout is tan or grizzled with a straight or slightly convex profile. When hiking caution should be exercised to not confront. Most danger when being close to Bear with cubs. If close to Bear make lots of noise and slowly walk away from the area. Running away could trigger a chase instinct. Do not feed Bears by leaving food in camp grounds or camp sites. |
